The How’s and Whys of RTP

If you’ve spent any time at an online casino then you will have some knowledge of the acronym RTP. The letters stand for Return to Player, and, in a nutshell, the RTP for a game will tell you about how high the game’s payout percentage is.

The RTP will tell you how much of the money which a game takes in will be paid out to players over a certain period of time. The higher this percentage is, the more you will stand to win over lengthening periods of time. Every slots game will have an RTP, as will online casinos in general.

The Flip Side of the House Edge

The RTP could also be understood as the other end of the house edge. If you know that American Roulette, for example, has a house edge of 5.26%, then the RTP could, theoretically be worked out at 94.74%: 100 – 2.26 = 94.74. This RTP, however, is theoretical, and you should always be taking it with a grain of salt.

Win Frequency and RTP

Oddly enough, win frequency and RTP is not correlated, and this is why RTPs can sometimes be misleading.

For example, a slots game with an RTP of 97% but a low payout frequency may only land winning combinations one every ten times. Another slots game with an RTP of 97% might have a higher payout frequency, and thus form winning combos once every three spins.

The catch lies in that slots with higher frequencies of landing winning combos do pay out more often, but the amounts that are paid are smaller. Thusly, slots games with lower win-combo frequencies will pay out larger sums of money less often.

Random and Fair Payouts

When you are trying to understand what casino game statistics are, it is important to appreciate that these numbers are based on a number of different events. The most important thing to wrap your head around is that they are subject to arbitrary chance, thanks to the fact that they are governed by Random Number Generators which ensure that the results for your play is always impartial and arbitrary.

At the end of day, the average Jane and Joe will not be able to calculate win likelihoods base on the mathematics governing RTP, although the higher these are, the better. Don’t play games at casinos that don’t have this information readily available, either, since this may be because the games are not fair.
